Magazine analysis- Look

Magazine alaysis- NME

I chose this music magazine because it is popular among teenagers. I noticed that the title of this particular issue, shows all of the magazine title, whilst other issues have a head covering some of the title. This shows that the magazine company presumes that readers will know what the magazine is by just looking at the letters that are visible. However, with those issues which cover the title, the name of the title, that is normally under the title, is visible to make sure readers know what magazine it is. This issue, has 'Event' covered by a photo of Gerard Way, we can see that it is him because the title underneath tells us this.

Morrissey is obviously the main focus of this magazine as his picture practically takes up half of the cover. I do not know much about him but we can tell from the text that he has a 'bigmouth' and that he has striked again. So just by that little piece of text, we can get an vague image of what he is like. Obviously he is known for his 80's music but like some singers, they make comebacks.

Red is obviously a very dominant colour of this front cover as red is seen to stand out more than most other colours. Red is used for the main title, the left side of the magazine in the background of the pictures to make them stand out a bit more and in the top right hand corner.

Basic fonts are used for this cover and most appear to be white with some blue and black fonts. White does go well on a red background and it makes it stand out, not to the extent that other colours like blue would, but it is enough to be eye catching.

This magazine is generally aimed at those in late teens to early twenties who maybe interested in rock or similar kinds of music. Unlike Love it, this magazine does not have it's price highlighted, probably due to the expense.

Magazine analysis- Love it

This is a magazine that some teenagers read. It is cheap to buy and weekly, so if teens want to read something new, they inly have to wait until the following Tuesday when the magazine is released in retails. This magazine publishes a variety of different stories, to fit needs of different people and often publishes stories that many teens can relate to.

Many magazines have a title that is in lower case, this magazine is no different from those. The exclamation mark makes the title stand out more, other magazines also have an exclamation mark but the title is often in upper case. The title is pink, giving it a feminine look as this magazine is aimed at females. The pink makes the title stand out more too.

The main story features Jordan. Her name is almost as big as the main title to make it stand out more, the sub-title under her name is to get readers attention, especially the words 'Exclusive baby pics'. Readers would want to buy this magazine to see the 'exclusive' pictures. Her picture also makes the magazine stand out more as the close up of her is directly next to the title, it is the largest image, to go with the largest story. The pink background to the title makes it stand out more, especially with the colours of the titles.

The price at the top left hand corner stands out as the price is big, showing that it's cheap and easy to afford, other magazines can range from slightly lower than this price, to several times the amount.. The bar next to the price, gives readers a basic idea of what is in the magazine. Teens are sometimes interested in real life stories and even more interested in celebrities.
The several side stories may also make the reader want to buy the magazines. The font of the titles help bring the eyes of the reader to them and the pictures also help.

Secondary teachers magazine

When first looking at this magazine, the title 'Secondary'. We can see that the magazine is aimed at those at a secondary school, looking at the sub title 'teachers' gives us the idea that this magazine is aimed at secondary school teachers, though pupils at a secondary school can also read this, as this magazine contains information that may be deemed relevant to pupils attending a secondary school.

The story at the top 'Super snappy lesson starters', also gives us the hint the magazine is mainly aimed at teachers as it will give hints on good and efficient ways of starting a lesson, students may also decide to read that but it's mainly for teachers.

As big as the title actually is, our eyes are drawn to the picture in the middle of two gingerbread men, one of which is a boy and one is a girl, we can tell that one is male and one is female because they seem to be wearing school uniforms. They also look happy, this may give the idea that the main story may to make students more cheerful. The title associated with the picture 'Cook with me!' gives the idea that students may want more cookery lessons, the exclamation mark at the end shows that it is important, an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence shows that it may be a demand, almost like a student is saying it. The sub-title 'How schools can make lessons tasty' is a play on words as the word 'tasty' shows some reflection in the title and the picture, it also means how to make the lessons more enjoyable.

The colours used on this cover are subtle and not bright. The title is the main text and the colours do not stand out as such, it is just the size. The colours they used are blue-green, these are seen as relaxing colours, almost as if it's an easy to read and enjoy magazine. The reds and pinks in the sub-stories are bold and stand out but they do not attract the eyes so much. The colours in the picture are nothing more than we would expect for the picture, however, the red shirt that is part of the students uniform does stand out but not that much.

Foundation portfolio

To start off my portfolio, we began with a preliminary task. This involved looking at the key media concepts and trying to see how this criteria would fit into the design and production of my college magazine. The acronym of LIIAR was used. LIIAR stands for: Language, Institution, Ideology, Audience and Representation.

Language- The overall layout of the magazine, this includes: font colour and sizes, logo's, images, proportions, the presentation and visibility of the magazines logo

Institution- The magazine is targeted at Wyke College students but teachers or parents or guardians of students may wish to read the magazine. My main target audience is students that are mainly ages between 16-19

Ideology- The magazine will show what a good college that Wyke is, that many of it's students are successful in their academic subjects and no matter what their background is, everyone has the same chance of passing. That all students are treated equally and have equal quality of education.

Audience- My main target audience are students aged between 16-19, though there are some older students, it will also be aimed at them too. I also know that there is an unequal ratio of boys to girls, the ratio is estimated at: 64:36 to girls, I am still going to make my magazine gender-bias, where both male and females can read and enjoy it

Representation- The students will be represented in this magazine as if it was a full magazines, students could write stories and experiences of the college. The magazine will represent the college, as a kind of a promotional magazine.
